Periodontitis affects nearly half of all adults to some degree. This common condition occurs when the gums become irritated due to excessive exposure to bacteria and plaque.
Periodontal disease, also commonly known as gum disease, is a condition marked by inflammation and infection in the gum tissue. It starts with swelling and irritation in the gums and can then progress further to cause the gums to pull back from the teeth, creating gaps known as periodontal pockets. These pockets can further trap bacteria and tartar, eventually damaging the gums, teeth, and jawbone, and causing tooth and bone loss.
Some of the symptoms of periodontal disease are chronic halitosis (bad breath), swelling and tenderness in the gum tissue, a constant bad taste in the mouth, painful chewing, tooth sensitivity, gum recession, pus around the gums and loose teeth.
The area of periodontics deals with the treatment of problems related to the supporting structures of the teeth. At Dentistry of East Sacramento, we offer comprehensive treatment for periodontal problems. Some of our treatments are listed below:
Scaling and Root Planing: The procedure involves a deep cleaning of the teeth, gums, and mouth using special dental instruments to reach below the gums and get rid of any tartar deposits. This is followed by smoothening of the surfaces of the roots of the teeth to prevent bacteria, tartar, and plaque from re-depositing there. We may prescribe antibiotic rinses after the treatment to prevent further infection.
Dental Crown Lengthening: This procedure involves adjusting the gum to expose more of a tooth’s crown. It is used to correct gummy smiles and to treat periodontal pockets.
Gingivectomy: This is a surgical procedure that is used to reduce the depth of periodontal pockets created as a result of gum disease. The treatment involves cleaning and lifting of the pockets so that the healthy gum can reattach itself to the teeth.
Bone Grafting: Bone grafting surgery is used to add natural or artificial bone to the jaw to increase bone density and enhance the success rate of implant surgery.
